2017 GLASS MAGAZINE AWARDS PRESENT BOLD FEATS OF GLASS AND GLAZING INNOVATION, FABRICATION, INSTALLATION AND DESIGN In recent years, glass and glazing industry companies have made major investments in research and development, and product innovation and design. The fruits of those investments in innovation come to bear among the winning projects and products of the 2017 Glass Magazine Awards. “For many years, products were being innovated faster than the market could figure out what to do with them. This year the stars [of the Glass Magazine Awards] are the designers, fabricators and installers, who are completing very innovative projects,” says Glass Magazine Awards Judge Rob Botman, general manager, Glassopolis, glassopolis.com. “It's … more amazing each year to see just how sophisticated our industry has become, and how everyone in the supply chain comes together to bring these designs to fruition,” says Judge Alice Dickerson, manager, marketing and communications, Building & Industrial, AGC Glass North America, us.agc.com. “I am impressed [with] the creativity and innovation that is accelerating in the industry. The opportunities to create striking design, while meeting the diverse needs and goals of clients and public at large are well represented with these entries,” adds Judge John Stephenson, senior architect and envelope specialist, BRPH Architects and Engineers, brph.com. This year’s winners include an interactive LED and solar glass walkway installation, a façade enclosure that mixes multiple glass types over a geometrically complex wall, and a sculpture that demonstrates how architectural glass can become art. The winning projects and products show off advancements and achievements in performance, aesthetics, production and delivery. “Once again, it’s great to see the versatility of glass among the project nominees. It’s clearly the one building material that provides a combination of structural, daylighting, aesthetic, and performance benefits,” says Judge Brian Harrington, principal, director of business development, Bellwether Design Technologies, bellwetherdesigntech.com. This year’s program features winners in nine award categories across three segments: Project Awards, Product Awards, and Factory and Field Awards. New this year, the Factory and Field awards include the Most Impressive Feat of Fabrication and Most Impressive Feat of Installation categories, and recognize the achievements behind the scenes that make innovative projects possible. Also new this year is the Unique Industry Innovation award to recognize a single cutting-edge glass or glazing product introduction. “The quantity and quality of this year's submissions are a clear testament to the current state of the glazing industry. We're all awake—hungry, listening and responsive,” says Judge Andrew Haring, vice president of marketing, C.R. Laurence Co. - U.S. Aluminum, crl-arch.com, crlaurence. com. “The obvious takeaway is that energy and performance codes are just as demanding as the expectations of the owner and architect. Bottom line: the manufacturers and glaziers are ready.” THE JUDGES THE GLASS MAGAZINE AWARDS WOULD NOT BE POSSIBLE WITHOUT THE PARTICIPATION OF OUR JUDGES .
